Maritime Baseball Falls to St. Joseph's Long Island

The Maritime College baseball team came up short on Saturday afternoon as they dropped a pair of games to St. Joseph's College Long Island.

The Privateers got off to a tough start in the opening game of the doubleheader, and despite relief pitcher Jimmy Tighe (Mineola, NY/Mineola) fighting his way out of a bases loaded, one-out jam without allowing a run, they still faced a large deficit in the bottom of the second inning. Maritime found their way onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning behind a double from Jonathan Raccanello and RBIs from Jaden Shea (Severn, MD/Archbishop Spalding) and Xavier Cruz (Franklin Square, NY/Kellenberg ), but they still trailed 9-2.

Maritime added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh inning behind RBI base hits from Phil Russo (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) and Vasilios Vafakos (Astoria, NY/Xavier), respectively, but it was too late to make a comeback attempt and they fell 10-4. Vafakos led the offense by going 2-4 at the plate, while Tighe had a strong showing out of the bullpen with 4.2 innings pitched with just two hits and one earned run.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Privateers struggles continued and they fell in seven innings by a score of 13-1. Despite the pair of losses, Maritime continues to hold onto a spot in the playoffs with an 8-5 record in conference action. They face off against the Golden Eagles again tomorrow at 11 a.m. in their final Skyline game of the season and it is a "win and in" situation for Maritime.
