Maritime Baseball Heads to Skyline Playoffs for Ninth Consecutive Season

The Maritime College baseball team is headed to the Skyline Conference playoffs for the ninth consecutive season after finishing the season with an 8-6 record in Skyline action and the fourth overall seed. The Privateers weren't able to clinch the spot in playoffs with a win in their final conference game of the season against St. Joseph's Long Island as they fell by a score of 10-7, but their strong start to the season was able to carry them into the playoffs, where they will travel to Kings Point on Friday at 11 a.m. to take on the Mariners.

Maritime got off to a slow start against the Golden Eagles, as they trailed 2-0 after two innings, but a monster third inning gave them a 6-2 advantage. Jonathan Raccanello got the rally started with a leadoff double, and after Jake Bernardi (Morris Park, NY/Fordham Prep) was hit by a pitch, Jaden Shea (Severn, MD/Archbishop Spalding) knocked a single through the left side to score Raccanello and get the Privateers on the board. Phil Russo (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) followed it up with an RBI single on his own, and then Shea scored on the throw down to second on a Russo stolen base. With two outs in the inning, Ryan Rockhill (Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe) drew a walk to bring up Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North), who then drilled a three-run home run over the left field fence to give Maritime a 6-2 lead.

The Privateers pitching and defense held strong for a few innings, but eventually the potent Golden Eagles offense broke through and scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Maritime added a run in the eighth inning behind a double from Russo and RBI single from Rockhill, but they couldn't complete the comeback and ultimately fell 10-7. Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, NY/Chaminade) highlighted the pitching performances with 3.2 innings of relief and no runs allowed on three hits.

The second game of the doubleheader, a non-conference game, saw more struggles from Maritime as they fell by a score of 16-2. The game was highlighted by an RBI double from Russo in the first inning, an RBI ground out from Rockhill, and 3.2 innings of relief pitching from Nick Schepens (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding), who allowed just one run on five hits.

The Privateers will play in the first game of the double elimination tournament against USMMA on Friday at 11 a.m. If the Privateers win they will play the winner of Old Westbury and St. Joseph's LI on Saturday at 1 p.m., and if they lose they will face the loser of that game Friday at 5 p.m.
