The Maritime College women's lacrosse team kept their momentum going from their win three days ago against USMMA as they defeated Manhattanville 14-11 on Tuesday night. The Privateers pulled out the victory thanks to a strong second half defensive effort as they only allowed four goals in the period, as well as a four-goal run to open up the half.
The Privateers got off to a bit of a shaky start as they trailed 2-0 early in the game, but they quickly rebounded and tied it at 3-3 thanks to two goals from freshman
Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton on Hudson, NY) and one from
Sarah Malone (Calvert County, MD/Calvert).The Privateers then appeared to close the half off on a strong note as they netted three unanswered goals down to a minute and half remaining to play to take an 8-6 lead, but the Valiants answered back and scored a goal with eight seconds left to make it a one goal game at halftime.
Maritime didn't let the last second goal affect their play in the second half as they came out hot with four straight goals to take a 12-7 lead. The reigning Skyline Conference Offensive Player of the Week,
Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East), found the back of the net on three of the four with
Sara Wright (East Islip, NY/East Islip) scoring the other. The five goal advantage proved to be enough thanks to the Privateers defensive prowess and goalkeeper
Elizabeth Pomaro (Farmingville, NY/Newfield), but Jillson Neuwirth and MacKenzie Fabiani netted two more goals in the final seven minutes to make it a 14-11 victory.
Jillson Neuwirth and Johnson led the offensive effort as they both finished with five points on four goals and an assist. Fabiani and
Jessica Fraccalvieri (Sayville, NY) both scored two goals, while Wright and Malone rounded out the scoring. Pomaro earned the win in goal by recording 12 saves on 32 shots faced.
"I'm proud of the team for being prepared to take on this tough Manhattanville team on short rest from the game against USMMA," said head coach
Kerri Handras. "We know there's still a lot of hard work ahead of us the next couple of weeks, but it's great to start the season 2-0 against two difficult opponents."
The Privateers will look to keep their winning ways going on Friday when they take on St. Joseph's Long Island in their home opener at 6 p.m.
