Slow Start Hampers Women's Lacrosse in Skyline Duel at Farmingdale

The Maritime College women's lacrosse team couldn't maintain their incredible run through the Skyline Conference on Friday night as they fell on the road to Farmingdale St. 16-9.

The Privateers got off to a slow start in the heavily anticipated matchup between the two unbeaten teams and they were unable to recover and make the necessary comeback. Seven minutes into the game Maritime found themselves trailing 3-0, but freshman attacker Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton on Hudson, NY) got them on the board with a free position goal. Unfortunately, the Rams tacked on the next two goals before the Privateers offense could finally start clicking. Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) scored and then assisted on a Sara Wright (East Islip, NY/East Islip) goal as they cut the lead to 6-3 with 13 minutes left to play in the half. Maritime needed to make one more push to close the gap before halftime, but couldn't get the momentum on their side and Farmingdale took a 9-4 advantage into the second period.

Maritime wasn't finished yet though as senior attacker Mackenzie Fabiani (Bayport, NY/Bayport Blue Point) provided a spark by netting the first two goals for the Privateers in the second half in the first 10 minutes of action. After Jillson Neuwirth scored a couple minutes later, Maritime found themselves only trailing the Rams 10-7 with 18 minutes to go in the game. As the Privateers attempted to turn up the pressure and score more goals, Farmingdale was able to capitalize and ended up scoring five unanswered goals. Back-to-back goals from Jessica Fraccalvieri (Sayville, NY) with five minutes left gave the Privateers one last shot at a miraculous comeback, but Farmingdale was able to run out the clock and pulled out the win.

Johnson led the offensive effort with four points on two goals and two assists, while Jillson Neuwirth, Fabiani, and Fraccalvieri each chipped in two. Johnson also led the team with six draw controls, three caused turnovers, and three ground balls. Elizabeth Pomaro (Farmingville, NY/Newfield) added 10 saves in goal for Maritime.

The Privateers next game at home against Mount Saint Vincent on Monday, April 19 has been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols, but will travel to Purchase College on Friday, April 23rd for a 4 p.m. start.
