Privateers Struggle Offensively, Drop Two to Purchase College

The Maritime College baseball team couldn't keep their momentum going after a season-opening sweep of Purchase College on Saturday as they dropped both games to the Panthers today by scores of 2-1, and 2-0, respectively.

The Privateers offensive struggles weren't evident early on as they jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning in the opening game. Leadoff hitter Matt Eng (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) got things going by drawing a walk and then stealing both second and third base, setting up an RBI double from Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, NY/Poly Prep). Unfortunately, the rally ended there and Maritime couldn't add to their lead.

The pitching duo of Niko Concha (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga) and Joe Ragone (Yonkers, NY/Stepinac) held strong for six combined innings allowing no runs and just four hits, but the Privateers defense couldn't hold off Purchase forever and they eventually took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Purchase pitcher Alex Doskoez put in a huge performance as he only allowed two hits and threw a complete game with over 120 pitches thrown.

The second act of the doubleheader saw more great pitching and defense from Maritime, but they couldn't string together and finished with zero runs on six hits. Eng, Zurita, Xavier Cruz (Franklin Square, NY/Kellenberg ), Justin Lee (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe), Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields), and Austen Bishop (Millersville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) all recorded hits, but the Privateers best shot at getting on the scoreboard was cut short on a runner's interference call in the bottom of the sixth with two men on base.

Keegan McDonald (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) got the start in game two and threw three innings with two hits and one run allowed. Also seeing time in relief was Ethan Peck (Manorville, NY/Eastport South Manor) with two innings pitched and no runs allowed, Chris Simone (Bayside, NY/Holy Cross) with one inning and a run allowed, and Nick Mateyunas (Northport NY, Northport/) with a scoreless inning.

The Privateers will look to get back in the win column next weekend as they take on Mount Saint Vincent in back-to-back doubleheaders.
