The Maritime College baseball team opened up the 2021 in exciting fashion as they pulled out the doubleheader sweep of Purchase College by scores of 2-0 and 8-7, respectively. In addition to the thrilling wins, senior outfielder
Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, NY/Poly Prep) recorded his 100th career hit for the Privateers with a single up the middle in the top of the third inning in the first game.
The Privateers got on the board early in the first game as
Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) doubled into left field to start the rally. Following the double, he stole third base on a Zurita walk and on the following play Mosca snuck into home as Zurita stole second base. The run scored by Mosca proved to be the only run the Privateers needed as the defensive effort held strong.
Ryan Ragone (Yonkers, NY/Stepinac) got the nod on the mound and threw four scoreless innings while only allowing one hit in the start.
Gabe Zwerin (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) came on in relief next and threw two scoreless innings, setting up
Matthew Paghidas (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) to close it out with a save in the bottom of the seventh. The trio only allowed three hits in the game.
In addition to Zurita's milestone 100th career hit in the third inning, Maritime added an insurance run in the top of the seventh after
Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) and
Ryan Rockhill (Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe) led off with back-to-back singles. After
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD/Archbishop Spalding) advanced both runners,
Matt Eng (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) brought home Forgione with a ground ball to third.
The second act of the doubleheader saw a much different game as the two teams combined for 15 runs on 23 hits. The Panthers were the first to strike as they scored a pair of runs in the first inning and then tacked on another in the third inning. However, the Privateers offense responded with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth.
Matt Eng (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) got things going with a single and then found himself on third base after a throwing error by the catcher. Following walks by Mosca and Zurita, Forgione and
Phil Russo (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) drove in a pair of runs to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of Purchase.
The offensive momentum for Maritime continued into the fifth inning as
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) led off with a triple and then scored on the following play by a ground ball to second from
Jake Bernardi (Morris Park, NY/Fordham Prep). The rally continued with yet another triple, this time by
Matt Eng (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) who drove in Shea. Two batters later, Zurita capped off the inning with an RBI single to center field.
Unfortunately, the Privateers lead didn't last long as they found themselves entering the seventh inning down 7-5. In the top of the seventh, Shea and Zurita found their way on base with a single and a walk, respectively, and then with Russo at bat a throwing error from the shortstop allowed Shea and Zurita to cross home plate and tie the game at 7. With the game tied heading into the eighth inning, it was Shea and Eng who came up clutch for the Privateers as Shea drew a walk and then adavanced to second on a wild pitch before Eng drove in the winning run with a double to left field.
John Ohanian (Bellmore, NY/Bellmore JFK) entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and threw 2.2 scoreless innings to allow the Privateers to come back before
Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, NY/Chaminade) came in to strikeout the final batter and earn the save and the win for Maritime.
Nick Schepens (Severna Park, MD/Archbishop Spalding),
Jimmy Tighe (Mineola, NY/Mineola), and
Keegan McDonald (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) combined to throw the first six innings of action.
Eng led the way for the Privateers in game two by going 4-5 at the plate in the lead off spot with two runs scored, two RBIs, two doubles, and a triple. Additionally Shea went 2-3 with three runs scored while Zurita, Russo, Forgione, and Bernardi all added RBIs.
The Privateers will return to action tomorrow at noon for another doubleheader against Purchase College. Only the first, nine-inning game will count towards the teams conference records while the second, seven-inning game will not.
