Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sarah Lawrence Stops Maritime Comeback Effort

THROGGS NECK, NY – After trailing by 21 points with 7:41 remaining, the Maritime College men's basketball team mounted a furious comeback on Wednesday night.  The Privateers (2-5, 0-2 Skyline) pulled within four in the final two minutes, but ultimately fell short, as Sarah Lawrence (2-4, 1-0 Skyline) held on for an 85-76 victory at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

The Gryphons led 68-47 when Mike Regan (Huntington Station, NY) drained a three to begin the Maritime rally.  An Alex Tartaglia (East Northport, NY) free throw capped the 26-9 run and brought the Privateers within 77-73 at the 1:45 mark.  That's as close as Maritime would get, though.  Sarah Lawrence went 6-for-6 at the foul line down the stretch to seal the nine-point, 85-76 win.

Sean Flynn (Flushing, NY) scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half.  He also recorded two blocks.  Regan led the Privateers with 17 points, and Nick Ovanessian (Bayside, NY) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.  Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY) collected six boards to go along with three assists and three steals, while Ryan Donovan (Carmel, NY) dished out four assists.  Maritime went 24-for-67 (35.8 percent) overall, but was plagued by poor three-point and free throw shooting.  The Privateers were just 4-for-19 (21.1 percent) from long range and 24-for-43 (55.6 percent) at the line.

Maritime scored the first four points of the game and led 6-2 before Sarah Lawrence went on a 16-3 run to open up an 18-9 advantage.  The Privateers responded with an 11-2 spurt of their own, tying the game at 20-20 on Regan's layup midway through the first half.  However, the Gryphons outscored Maritime 22-11 over the final 8:36 of the period to take a 42-31 cushion into the locker room.

It was a 53-40 game with 14:03 remaining when Sarah Lawrence used a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the night, 62-40.  Maritime scored the next five points, but the Gryphons countered with six of the next eight to go up 68-47 with 7:41 left.

Liam Barry finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for the Gryphons.  Lucas Murray also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards, while Justin Bailey tallied 12 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists.  Xiyuan Zhang added 11 points and three assists for Sarah Lawrence, which shot 44.1 percent (30-of-68) from the field, 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from three-point land, and 76 percent (19-of-25) at the charity stripe.

This game was the make-up of a contest that was postponed on Dec. 1.  Maritime will visit Hunter (3-4), Wednesday's originally-scheduled opponent, at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
