FRANKLIN, MA – The Maritime College football team put together its most complete offensive game of the year on Saturday afternoon. The Privateers (2-5, 2-2 ECFC) racked up 437 yards of total offense, including a season-high 189 yards on the ground, and scored a touchdown in every quarter of their 31-27 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) victory over Dean (2-7, 1-4 ECFC) at Dale Lippert Field.
Maritime got on the board immediately, receiving the opening kickoff and marching 68 yards in seven plays. A six-yard pass from
David Keogh (Mahopac, NY) to
Christian Schiavone (White Plains, NY) capped the drive and gave the Privateers a 7-0. Dean responded with a touchdown of its own, and the score would remain 7-7 until late in the first half.
As has become Maritime's trademark, the Privateers drove for a touchdown just before halftime. Maritime got the ball back on Dean' 46 with 5:45 left in the half and proceeded to take nearly four minutes off the clock. Keogh's 24-yard strike to
Pat Quinn (Rockville Centre, NY) finished off the 12-play drive that put the Privateers up 14-7 at the break.
After Dean tied it with a TD on its first possession of the second half, Schiavone put Maritime back in front with his second touchdown of the game, a one-yard rush. However, it took the Bulldogs just 2:03 to level the score once more.
Joseph Gagliardi (Ronkonkoma, NY) kicked a 29-yard field goal to put Maritime back in front early in the fourth quarter, then, after forcing a Dean punt, the Privateers increased their lead to 10 points when Keogh connected with
Ian Derda (Guilford, CT) for a 75-yard TD midway through the period. The Privateers attempted an onside kick and recovered it, allowing them to eat up 2:24 of game time before punting back to the Bulldogs.
Dean eventually found the end zone on David Curry's seven-yard pass to Quintus Reed with 1:02 remaining. The Bulldogs missed the extra point, though, keeping Maritime's lead at four, 31-27. Maritime recovered the onside kick, allowing Schiavone to rush three times and run out the clock on the Privateers' first road win since a 13-10 triumph at Anna Maria on Oct. 26, 2019.
Schiavone finished with 138 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. He also caught four passes for 40 yards and a score. Keogh was 18-for-37 for 248 yards and three touchdowns. He added 46 rushing yards.
Andrew Wierzbicki (Florida, NY) led the defense with 10 tackles, and
Sean Hart (Brooklyn, NY) collected two sacks.
Zander Timothy (Woodland Park, NJ), meanwhile, recorded an interception.
For the Bulldogs, Curry had 95 rushing yards to go along with 192 yards through the air. He ended up 11-for-30 with two passing touchdowns, and he also ran in a score. Reed was on the receiving end of both TD passes, part of a five-reception, 125-yard day. Desmond Dias had 14 tackles, including 10 solo stops, while Dre Kidd tallied nine solo tackles.
Next Saturday, Maritime welcomes Keystone (0-9, 0-5 ECFC) to Reinhart Field at 1 p.m. for its final home game of the season. The Privateers will honor their graduating seniors prior to the contest.
