Privateers Topped By Farmingdale On Senior Night

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College women's volleyball team played its final home match of the season on Thursday night against Farmingdale State.  The first-place Rams (15-9, 10-1 Skyline) proved too much for the Privateers (5-15, 3-8 Skyline), notching a 25-16, 25-16, 25-4 victory at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

It was 4-4 early in the first set when Farmingdale State went on a 6-1 run to open up a 10-5 cushion.  The Rams eventually extended their advantage to 23-13 before Maritime scored three straight points to pull within 23-16.  Farmingdale State won the next two points, though, to close out a 25-16 set win.

In the second set, it was the Privateers who built a 4-1 lead before the Rams rallied to tie the score at 6-6.  Maritime scored the next two points to go back in front, but Farmingdale State responded with nine of the next 10 to go up 15-9.  After the Privateers trimmed their deficit to four at 17-13, the Rams ended the set on an 8-3 spurt finish off their second straight 25-16 win.  Farmingdale State then dominated the third set, earning a 25-4 win to seal the victory.

Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) and Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) led the Privateers with four kills apiece, and Mele also posted a team-high seven digs.  Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY), meanwhile, distributed six assists.

Cathleen Farrell had 13 kills and seven digs for Farmingdale State.  Kalena Ricketts added 11 kills, while Mikayla Profeta tallied nine kills.  Lexi Cavalieri handed out 18 assists to go along with two service aces, and Molly Miller contributed 15 assists.  Madisyn Pozo finished with a match-high nine digs for the Rams, who hit .392 (43 kills, 12 errors, 79 attempts) as a team.

Following the contest, Maritime honored its graduating senior Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, NY).  Including Thursday night, Eagleton played in 71 of the Privateers' 72 matches during her career.

Maritime has one match remaining on its 2021 schedule.  The Privateers visit Rutgers-Newark (5-15) at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
