FARMINGDALE, NY – The Maritime College men's soccer team concluded its 2021 season with a matchup at Farmingdale State on Thursday. In a contest that was delayed two days by inclement weather, the Rams (10-5-1, 8-2-1 Skyline) topped the Privateers (7-8-0, 4-7-0 Skyline) by a 2-0 count at Rams Field.
Farmingdale State got on the board early, as Derick Rivera snuck one past
Tim Nichols (West Seneca, NY) in the ninth minute. The Rams then increased their advantage to 2-0 on Roberto Alfaro's goal just before the end of the first half.
Sean O'Neill (Highland Mills, NY) nearly cut the Privateers' deficit in half in the 56
th minute, but his shot was stopped by Farmingdale State goalkeeper Justin Silva. That would prove to be Maritime's best scoring chance in the 2-0 defeat.
Nichols and
Ryan Mathis (West Seneca, NY) split time in goal for the Privateers. Nichols (6-8-0) started and took the loss. He was credited with two saves. Mathis, meanwhile, registered seven saves while not allowing a goal in the second half.
This marked the final game for Mathis, Nichols, O'Neill and seven other seniors who helped Maritime notch 33 victories during their careers, including a Skyline Conference championship in 2019.
