THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College women's soccer team concluded its non-conference schedule by welcoming The City College of New York to Reinhart Field on Thursday night. Unfortunately, the Privateers (5-8-0) saw their two-game winning streak come to an end, as the Beavers (7-5-0) earned a 4-1 victory.
Both teams had a number of early scoring chances, but goalkeepers
Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) and Rosario Baltazar kept the game scoreless. CCNY finally broke the 0-0 deadlock on Charlotte Foberg's 31
st-minute goal. The Beavers then increased their advantage to 2-0 when Cassidy Canberg scored in the 62
nd minute.
Maritime responded just 36 seconds later.
Brianne Etienne (Garden City, NY) created space from 30 yards out, turned around, fired, and found the back of the net. However, Foberg added a pair of tallies four minutes apart to complete a hat trick and put the Beavers in front 4-1. The Privateers applied some offensive pressure over the final 10 minutes, but were unable to mount a comeback.
Etienne's goal was her second in as many games and third this season. Pomaro (5-8-0), meanwhile, made 11 saves.
CCNY outshot Maritime 25-12, including a 16-5 edge in shots on goal. Nicole Magretta had two assists for the Beavers, and Baltazar (6-3-0) was credited with four saves.
After playing three games in five days, Maritime now has nearly a week off before returning to action. The Privateers (2-7-0 Skyline) wrap up their 2021 campaign with a 7 p.m. matchup against Old Westbury (4-10-0, 2-6-0 Skyline) at Reinhart Field on Wednesday. Maritime will honor its graduating seniors before the contest.
