Privateer Seniors Go Out On Top

THROGGS NECK, NY – Four days after watching the men's squad earn a thrilling 1-0 Senior Day victory on Saturday, the Maritime College women's soccer team made sure its seniors got a similar send-off.  Despite conceding the first goal and being down a player for the final 65 minutes, the Privateers (6-8-0, 3-7-0 Skyline) rallied to notch a 2-1 win over Old Westbury (4-13-0, 2-8-0 Skyline) in the season finale at Reinhart Field on Wednesday night.

Prior to the game, the Privateers honored seniors Abby Boylan (West Point, NY), Katherine Buser (Babylon, NY), Brianne Etienne (Garden City, NY), Autumn-Sky Mandaglio (Colonia, NJ) and Sara Wright (East Islip, NY).  Boylan was then thrust into the spotlight when she had to move into the goal after Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) received a red card in the 24th minute.  She immediately proved up to the challenge, saving the ensuing Old Westbury free kick from just outside the box seconds after taking over.

The Panthers got on the board in the 27th minute when Melanie Escobar's rocket banged off the crossbar and in, but the Privateers countered 12 minutes later.  Kiera Ford's (Montgomery, NY) shot was saved and the rebound went right to Courtney Curley (Churchville Chili, NY), who put it home to level the score heading into halftime.

Curley struck again in the 73rd minute. She got free from her defender, ran down the left side, and found the lower left corner to give Maritime a 2-1 lead.  The goal was Curley's fourth of the season, all of which came in the Privateers' final three games.

Old Westbury earned a last-gasp corner kick with 25 seconds remaining.  The Panthers were unable to get a shot off in time, however, and Maritime celebrated its first-ever win over Old Westbury (the Privateers had been 0-10-2 in the series previously).

Boylan (1-0-0) finished with four saves in her emergency goalkeeping appearance.  Evelyn Martel made seven first-half saves for Old Westbury, while Jennifer Pasquariello (4-13-0) took the loss after playing the second half in goal for the Panthers.

Maritime's six victories were its most since the 2015 season.  The Privateers won three of their final four contests and set a program record with three conference wins.
