Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Josberger’s Game-Winner Lifts Maritime Past St. Joseph’s Brooklyn

THROGGS NECK, NY – After falling behind 1-0, the Maritime College women's soccer team (4-7-0, 1-7-0 Skyline) scored a pair of goals, including Anya Josberger's (Coxsackie, NY) game-winner in the 35th minute, to earn a 2-1 victory over St. Joseph's Brooklyn (5-7-1, 2-5-0 Skyline) at Reinhart Field on Sunday.  The win snapped was the Privateers' first over the Bears since 2014.

St. Joseph's Brooklyn opened the scoring in the 11th minute.  Mia Castaneda fired a rocket from 25 yards out that just got past Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) and bent inside the left post to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

In the 26th minute, Maritime earned a corner kick to set up the tying score.  Josberger took the corner kick and sent it into the box.  A St. Joseph's Brooklyn defender tried to clear the ball, but ended up knocking it into the net for an own goal.  The Privateers then took the lead in the 35th minute, when Josberger's free kick from 35 yards away was placed perfectly just under the crossbar.  It was her third goal of the season.

The Privateers had several chances to add to their lead in the second half, but were turned away by Alexis Breen each time.  Pomaro was just as clutch in the Maritime net, making three late saves to preserve the victory and snap the Privateers' six-game losing streak.

Pomaro (4-7-0) finished with seven saves in the contest.  Sierra Bedrin (0-4-0) took the loss for St. Joseph's Brooklyn after allowing both goals and posting one save.  Breen was credited with four saves over the final 55 minutes for the Bears.

This was the first of three games in five days for the Privateers.  Maritime continues its homestand on Tuesday, when Yeshiva (0-7-0, 0-7-0 Skyline) visits Reinhart Field for a 5 p.m. matchup.  Following the women's game, the Maritime and Yeshiva men will meet at 7:30 p.m.
