WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Maritime College women's lacrosse team played their third game in as many days on Sunday afternoon and they didn't skip a beat as they earned their fourth straight victory. The Privateers were coming off a pair of victories in the Maritime Cup on Friday and Saturday and kept the momentum rolling with a 14-7 win over the Colonels.
The Privateers wasted no time taking control of the game as they scored the first five goals of the game. The Privateers not only scored five goals in the first 15 minutes of action, but they also didn't allow a goal from the hosts during that time frame as well.
Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, NY/Miller Place) netted three of the first five goals, while
Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) scored the other two. The first 15 minutes of the game proved to be a difference maker in the contest as Wilkes was able to settle in after the big run from Maritime. The Privateers won five of the first six draw controls to keep the ball in their possession for the majority of that time frame.
The Colonels managed to cut the score to 8-4 with just under three minutes left in the first half, but Maritime got the last goal in as Deleva assisted a
Sara Wright (East Islip, NY/East Islip) goal with 1:22 remaining. Wright's goal allowed the Privateers to steal the momentum heading into the locker rooms and they were able to stop any thoughts of a comeback attempt in the second half.
In the second half, Wilkes was able to to make it a four-goal differential with 10 minutes left in regulation, but they didn't have the offensive firepower to keep up with Maritime as goals from
Mackenzie Fabiani (Bayport, NY/Bayport Blue Point), Deleva, and Wright sealed the 14-7 win.
Deleva led the offensive effort with seven points on five goals and two assists. Johnson added four goals and an assist for five points, while Wright chipped in three goals and an assist for four points. Wright led the team in draw controls and ground balls with nine and seven, respectively.
Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, NY/Huntington) played all 60 minutes in goal once again and earned her fourth win of the year with seven saves.
The Privateers will rest for three days before returning to action on March 12 at Hood College at 3:00 p.m.
