BRONXVILLE, NY - The Maritime College men's basketball team dropped a tough Skyline Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Sarah Lawrence. Both teams entered the matchup at 6-7 in conference play looking to secure the third spot in the north division, but the Gryphons came out on top 62-45.
The first half saw a defensive battle from both teams, but Sarah Lawrence was able to take control of the game in the closing minutes of the half. The Gryphons led 7-2 early in the game, but a three-pointer from
Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and layup by
Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) on back-to-back possessions quickly tied the game up. Gray then gave the Privateers their first lead of the game by knocking down two free throws and eventually made it a four-point advantage at 13-9 with 10 minutes left. A few possessions later,
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) knocked down a jumper to keep the lead, but that would mark the final basket of the half for Maritime.
Despite the slow end to the first half, Gray got the Privateers back in it by scoring seven straight points for the Privateers. With 13 minutes left in the game,
Mike Regan (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's) brought the score down to single digits by knocking down a three off a pass from Gray. Maritime went on to cut the lead to just six points with nine minutes remaining in the game, but Sarah Lawrence regained control and went on to win the game by 17 points.
Gray finished with a team-high 18 points on 7-11 shooting as well as six rebounds. McGovern and
Brennan Whelan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) each chipped in eight points as well. The Privateers are currently holding onto a playoff spot at 6-8 in conference play, but they have two more tough conference contests ahead. Maritime will head to Manhattanville College on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. before returning to Riesenberg Hall for senior day on Saturday at 1 p.m. against USMMA.
