THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College men's basketball team fell to Yeshiva University at home on Wednesday by a score of 94-56. The Maccabees, currently a top-30 team in the country, were coming off a long winter break and were able to steal the momentum early in the game. The Privateers battled for all 40 minutes, but couldn't put together the big scoring runs needed to keep up with Yeshiva.
Two minutes into the game,
Griffin McNally (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) kicked out a pass to
Brennan Whelan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) who drained a three-point shot to bring Yeshiva's lead to 6-5, but that would mark the final time Maritime was within one possession of the high-powered Maccabees offense. With 13 minutes left to play,
Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) knocked down a three of his own to keep Maritime within reach at 16-12. Unfortunately, the Privateers went cold from the floor after that and Yeshiva extended their lead to double digits.
Entering the second half with a large deficit, Maritime's defense buckled down and only gave up 10 points to the Maccabees in the first eight minutes of the half. Despite the strong defensive effort after the halftime break, the Privateers offense couldn't find its rhythm and struggled to close the gap. Yeshiva went on to defeat Maritime to improve to 13-1 on the season.
Whelan led the Privateers offensive effort with 16 points on 6-10 shooting. McGovern and
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) also chipped in eight and seven points, respectively. "Yeshiva is a great team and we definitely improved our defensive effort in the second half, but we needed a stronger first half to stay in the game," said head coach
Mike Berkun. "It was a tough game, but we're going to get back to practice and look to get back on the winning side Saturday."
Maritime takes on St. Joseph's Long Island on Saturday in Riesenberg Hall at 1:00 p.m.
