Patchogue, N.Y. - The Maritime College women's soccer team dropped their Skyline Conference opener on Saturday afternoon to St. Joseph's (L.I.), 7-2. With the loss, the Privateers moved to 4-4 (0-1) on the season.
Maritime responded to a Golden Eagles goal in the 12th minute with two goals from Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) in the 17th minute to take an early 2-1 lead. Wright's first goal came off a long ball over the defense, as she ran past everyone to beat the goalkeeper for the score. Just 25 seconds later, Brianna Etienne passed to Wright, who was able to push the ball past the keeper inside the near post.
The Golden Eagles evened the score in the 19th minute, and continued to put pressure on the Privateer defense, eventually taking a 5-2 lead into halftime.
The second half was all St. Joseph's, as they out-shot Maritime, 15-1, and were able to add two more goals to their total, for a final score of 7-2.
Privateers goalkeeper, Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY/Newfield), finished with nine saves in 90 minutes of action.
Maritime will look to secure their first Skyline Conference win of 2019 on Wednesday, October 2, as they host Mount St. Mary at 7:00 PM on Reinhart Field.
