THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College football team continued its offensive struggles on Saturday afternoon as they fell to William Paterson by a score of 35-0. The Privateers offensive woes continued from last weekend in a road loss to the United States Merchant Marine Academy as the offense only managed five first downs against the stout Pioneers defense.
After an opening drive punt, the Privateers defense got off to a strong start as they forced a three-and-out from William Paterson. However, Maritime's offense wasn't able to take advantage of the stop and had to punt the ball back to the Pioneers. Led by a 28-yard completion, William Paterson was able to march down the field for the first score of the game.
Later in the quarter, the Privateers defense came up big again as they stopped a 4th-and-inches conversion attempt behind a tackle from
Salvatore Escaldi (Farmingville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist). Following the turnover on downs,
Christian Schiavone (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) picked up a 15-yard gain on first down from the wildcat. Unfortunately, that was the end of the momentum swing and three plays later a bad snap on a punt put the Pioneers in the red zone.
Trailing 20-0 in the second quarter, the Privateers kept trying to push the tempo offensively, but couldn't put together a drive and entered the locker rooms trailing by three scores. The second half continued to be dominated on both sides of the ball by William Paterson and Maritime wasn't able to mount a comeback similar to their week one victory over Maine Maritime.
Maritime went on to finish the game with just 88 yards and four turnovers.
Jack Lynn (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) passed for a team-high 48 yards, while Schiavone led the ball carriers with 50 yards on 11 carries.
Justin Snuffer (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) led the defense with nine tackles, followed by
Liam Bailey (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) with eight.
Dennis Hanley (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and
James Varga (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights)Â combined for two total sacks.
The Privateers will head to their bye week 1-3 overall with ECFC play looming in October. Maritime will travel to Dean College on October 12 before returning to Reinhart Field on October 19 for homecoming against Castleton.
