The Maritime College women's volleyball team couldn't pull out a non-conference road matchup on Thursday night as they fell to William Paterson in three sets. The Privateers played a strong second set, but ultimately fell by scores of 25-9, 25-22, 25-12.
The high-powered offense from the Pioneers was too much to handle for Maritime in the opening frame, but Maritime was able to bounce back in set two by picking up a match-high 16 kills.Â
Trailing 10-9 in the second set,
Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) put down a big kill to tie the set before stepping to the service line. She followed it up with an ace and then
Katie Solinsky (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) and
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) tallied back-to-back kills for a 13-10 advantage. Unfortunately, the Privateers couldn't keep the momentum going and eventually fell to the hosts 25-22 in the set.
Maritime hoped to keep the match within striking distance as they tied the third set early on after a block from
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) and Eagleton, but a big run from William Paterson sealed the three-set win.Â
The Privateers led a balanced attack as four Privateers tallied six or more kills with Custodio leading the way at seven. Solinsky, Eagleton, and
Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial) each tallied six to round out the top offensive performers, while
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) dished out 21 assists.
Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) led the back line with an impressive 20-dig outing.
Maritime will return to Riesenberg Gymnasium on Monday, September 23 as they begin Skyline action against Purchase College at 6 p.m. The conference matchup will also be the Shipyard Game of the Week!
