Wright's Hat Trick Leads Women's Soccer Past Saint Elizabeth

Throggs Neck, NY - The Maritime College women's soccer team picked up its second straight win in style on Monday night as they defeated the College of Saint Elizabeth 5-0 behind a hat trick from junior forward Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip).

The Privateers dominated play on both sides of the ball against the Eagles early on as they registered 14 shots in the first half, compared to zero from the visitors. Maritime also tallied 13 corner kicks in the opening period. Despite totaling six corner kicks and three goals in the first 15 minutes, the Privateers couldn't break through and score a goal on Saint Elizabeth. Luckily, in the 18th minute Wright took control of a free kick from Kayla Kelly (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and put the ball past the goalie in the lower right corner to put the Privateers on the board.

Maritime continued their constant pressure on the Eagles defense, but were unable to put any more goals on the board in the first half and entered halftime with just a one goal lead. The Privateers came out of halftime firing on all cylinders and put up three goals in the first twenty minutes of action. Wright tallied the first two of the half to complete her hat trick, with the first coming off an assist from MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and the second one unassisted. In the 64th minute, Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Brianne Etienne (Garden City, N.Y.).

The Privateers kept control of the game for all 90 minutes and eventually tacked on a fifth and final goal in the 80th minute off the foot of Caitlin Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City). Freshman goalkeeper Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY/Newfield) and the Maritime defense picked up their first shutout of the 2019 season in the win. Pomaro saved both shots she faced, including a difficult near post shot on a break-a-away late in the game.

Maritime finished the contest with 28 shots, 19 on target, and 17 corner kicks. The Privateers will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to Rosemont College Saturday at 12:00 p.m. They will play their final non-conference game on Tuesday, Sep. 24 at Valley Forge.
