Women's Soccer Cruises Past Pratt with 3-1 Win

The Maritime College women's soccer team improved to 3-2 in the 2019 season with a 3-1 win over Pratt on Saturday afternoon. The Privateers jumped out early in the first half with a 2-0 lead and never looked back as they walked away with a 3-1 win.

Maritime dominated play early on, but they struggled to break through Pratt's defense in the first twenty minutes of play. However, in the 25th minute Anya Joseberger (Coxsackie, NY/Coxsackie-Athens) found MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), who took the pass and split two defenders with a shot to put the Privateers on the board. With the momentum fully on their side, Maritime continued to pressure the Cannoneers and as Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored an unassisted goal just four minutes later to make it a two-goal advantage.

Pratt looked to cut the lead before halftime, but a save in the 38th minute by freshman goalkeeper Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY/Newfield) kept the first half shutout alive. The second half saw a quick start from Maritime as Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip) played a ball into the box that found the foot of Joseberger who turned and rifled the ball past the diving goalie to make it a 3-0 game.

Leading by three goals, the Privateers continued play up-tempo soccer and kept the Pratt defense on its heels. Unfortunately, the Cannoneers were able to escape a shutout in the 79th minute by sneaking one past Maritime's defense.

Pomaro picked up three saves in the win, while the Privateers and Cannoneers each totaled seven shots and five corner kicks in the game. The Privateers will look to build off the win on Monday, September 16 when they take on St. Elizabeth at 5 p.m. Maritime defeated them last year by a score of 6-1.
