The Maritime College women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit against CCNY on Thursday night and eventually fell to the visitors by a score of 3-1.
Early in the game, the Beavers were able to find the back of the net as they struck a ball from outside the box into the top right corner of the goal. The Privateers responded with a flurry of offensive pressure following the goal, but they weren't able to get anything past the CCNY defense early in the half. Later in the opening half, the Beavers were able to extend their lead to 2-0 after a diving save from
Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY/Newfield) rebounded to the foot of a CCNY player.
Maritime registered three more shots and two more corner kicks before halftime, but still weren't able to close the gap to a one goal advantage. The Beavers opened up the second half similar to the start of the game as they tacked on another goal to their lead. However, the Privateers were able to respond this time less than three minutes later as a
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) corner kick made it to the front of the net where
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) buried it into the back of the net for their first goal of the game.
Despite the momentum shift in Maritime's favor, the Privateers weren't able to cut the lead anymore and eventually fell to CCNY 3-1. Maritime registered nine shots throughout the game and nine corner kicks.
The loss dropped the Privateers to 2-2 overall, but they will look to get back in the win column this Saturday at 2 p.m. when they take on Pratt Institute on Reinhart Field.
