Women's Volleyball Falls in Four to Brooklyn College

The Maritime College women's volleyball team continued its non-conference competition on Tuesday night as they traveled to Brooklyn College. The Privateers struggled to find their rhythm early on, and ultimately fell in four sets to the Bulldogs 25-10, 25-9, 18-25, 25-16.

Despite the slow start, Maritime was able to find their stride on offense in the third set as they teamed up for 14 kills and a .464 hitting percentage to bounce back with a 25-18 win. In the third set, the Privateers were led early on by Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) who picked up a block and three kills in the first four points won. With the Bulldogs closing the gap in the set at 20-16, Maritime buckled down on offense and ran four straight points to make it 24-16. Two points later, freshman Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY/Lawrence) sealed the set with a kill.

Needing to win the fourth set to stay in the match, the Privateers couldn't keep the momentum going from their set win and trailed 11-5 early. Although Maritime made multiple attempts to close the gap, Brooklyn College held strong and was able to close out the match 25-16 in the last set.

Custodio led the Privateers with 11 kills, five blocks, and a .214 hitting percentage. The sophomore middle blocker has had a stellar start to the 2019 season as she leads the team in kills and hitting percentage. Fellow middle blocker Katie Solinsky (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) added four kills, while junior captain Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial) chipped in five. Defensively, Rylee Malone (Southington, Conn./University High School of Science & Engineering) and Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) totaled 10 digs each to lead the back line.

The Privateers will look to get back in the win column on Thursday when they travel to the Pratt Institue for a 7 pm first serve. Following the away matchup will be the annual Maritime Cup, which will be hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
