THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime men's soccer team opened up its 2019 campaign with a victory against Webb Institute, 12-0, on Friday evening on Reinhart Field. The Privateers were paced by a hat trick from Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), with another eight members scoring at least one goal.
Maritime kept the pressure on Webb's defense all game, finishing with 28 shots on goal, and seven corner kicks.
In the match's first 15 minutes, the Privateers were able to score three goals, two by John Kilmeade, and one by Jason Carseni (Babylon, NY/West Babylon). The lead grew to five after goals from Nicholas Ciacca (Bologna, Italy/Pelham Memorial (N.Y.)) at 21:43 and Jack Dugan (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) at 27:26.
The first half scoring for the Privateers wrapped up with goals from Andrew Higgins (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) at 31:44 and Frank Schmidt (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) at 34:44, as Maritime took a 7-0 lead to halftime.
Tavernese put the ball into the back of the net three times in the second half, with assists from Gino Nicholas, and Thomas Kropp (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) on his first two goals of the season. At 71:33, Tavernese took the defense on, and scored an unassisted goal for his third and final goal of the match.
To close out the scoring, the Privateers' Jake Palmer (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) shot past the Webb goalkeeper at 75:56 for his first goal of the season.
