Privateers Historic Season Comes to a Close in Loss to USMMA

The Maritime College women's lacrosse team saw their historic 2019 season come to a close on Wednesday evening, as they fell in Skyline Conference Tournament play. The top-seeded Merchant Marine, bested the Privateers by a score of 23-8. The loss put a close to a historic season in which the Privateers earned the programs first Skyline Conference Tournament berth, and finished the season with the all-time program best record of 8-6. The Privateers will bid farewell to the senior class that spearheaded this historic season, as Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), and Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) will all leave the program after four seasons at Maritime.

In the game, Sophomore Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) stepped up for the Privateers against their tough opponent, as she totaled a team-high four goals. Behind Wright, Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) added three goals along with two assists. Deleva, who led all Skyline Conference players in points with 89, added to her total as she contributed a team-best five points. Graduating as one of the best Privateers in program history, Pfundstein scored one goal in the game. On the season, Pfundstein is tied for first in the Skyline Conference in goals per game, with 4.00.

Despite trailing halfway through the second period, the Privateers put together a 3-0 run in a six-minute span. The Privateers efforts were led by two goals off the stick of Deleva, and a Wright goal, assisted by Deleva. In goal, Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) added to her stellar season, as she totaled 13 saves. The Privateers were also competitive on the ground all day, as they fell just short in total ground balls to the Mariners, by a 19-to-14 margin.  In the second half, the Privateers tied the Mariners in ground balls, at six apiece.

In their first season under head coach Alyssa Guido, the Privateers program reached heights they never reached before. Behind Guido, the Privateers finished fourth in the Skyline Conference in goals scored and finished second in least goals allowed. The Privateers also held the third best point differential in the conference.

On the season, the Privateers saw great individual success.  Two of the most prolific offensive players in program history, Deleva and Pfundstein, etched themselves in the Maritime Women's Lacrosse record books. Deleva recorded her 200th career point, and 100th career goal on the season. With 100 plus goals and counting, Deleva holds the career program-high in goals. Pfundstein recorded her 100th career point, and set the program record for goals in a season, while Wright also set the program record in draw controls.

Coach Guido and the Privateers will look to continue to grow as a program, as they return two of the programs record-holders, in Deleva and Wright for the 2020 season.
