Baseball Caps Off 2019 Regular Season with Doubleheader Split at Purchase

The Maritime College baseball team capped off its 2019 regular season with a doubleheader split at Purchase College. The Privateers improved to 11-7 in Skyline play with the split and clinched a home playoff game on Wednesday, May 1.

Maritime opened up the doubleheader by giving up a run in the bottom of the first inning, but quickly bounced back after Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) scored Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) from third base. However, the Panthers were able to regain the lead in the fourth inning and never trail again. The Privateers started a rally in the top of the sixth after Nick McTighe (Merrick, N.Y./Holy Trinity) led off with a double and two batters later, Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) brought him with a double of his own, but Maritime wasn't able to even the score and Purchase held on to a 3-2 lead. In the top of the ninth, the Privateers made one final push at a comeback, but were unable to close the gap and eventually fell 6-3.

The second act of the conference doubleheader got off to a better start for Maritime as they picked up a run in the top of the first. Matt Eng (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) led off with a single and then added to his single-season record for steals by swiping second base. Russo then smacked a single through the right side and allowed Eng to cross home plate safely for their first lead of the day.

After the Panthers tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, Eng stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning. The Brooklyn, NY native came up clutch and singled through the left side to make it a 3-1 lead. Maritime's defense and pitching then took over the game and completely shut down any hopes of a comeback from Purchase. In the top of the fourth inning, Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and Eng each picked up an RBI to add to the lead and help seal the game.

Eng finished the game 4-4 with three RBIs and one run scored, while Eric Wenig (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) and Diaz each tallied two hits in the 5-1 win. Niko Concha (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga), Travis Bruinsma (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot), Ryan Ragone (Yonkers, NY/Stepinac), Ryan Maciaszek (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) and Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) all contributed solid outings on the mound.

The Privateers will host a home playoff game on Wednesday, May 1. Stay tuned for updates on what time the first pitch will be.
