Baseball Celebrates Four on Senior Day vs. Farmingdale St.

The Maritime College baseball team celebrated its four seniors, A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction)Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold), Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), and Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) in their final regular season home games of the season against Farmingdale St. on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Privateers didn't get the result they were hoping for as they dropped both games of the doubleheader, 6-1 and 5-0, respectively.

In the opening game, the Rams got off to a hot start as they scored three runs in the opening frame. Maritime couldn't put together a rally at the right time though as they weren't able put up a run until the bottom of the sixth when they were trailing 5-0. Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep) hammered a double to the left-centerfield gap and was then brought home by a single up the middle from Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade). The Privateers couldn't close the gap any further though and eventually fell to the top-ranked Skyline Conference foe 6-1.

Niko Concha (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga) threw six innings in the start and allowed two earned runs on six hits. Fortunato and Poliwoda finished the game in relief and combined for three innings with one run allowed. Sullivan led the offensive effort by going 2-4 at the plate, while Zurita, Eric Wenig (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley), Scerra, and Ryan Rockhill (Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe) each added a hit of their own.

After a short ceremony honoring the four seniors, game two started off in a similar pattern for Maritime. Farmingdale St. brought in two runs in the top of the first inning and never let the Privateers back into the game.

A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) locked down the Rams after the two unearned runs in the opening inning and threw six innings with five strikeouts. However, a couple costly errors in the top of the seventh inning let the game slip away and the Privateers couldn't put together a comeback attempt to split the conference doubleheader. Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), Sullivan, Scerra, and Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) recorded hits for Maritime in the 5-0 loss.

Maritime 20-15 (10-6) finish off the regular season with a doubleheader at Purchase College on April 27 at noon. To see the full Skyline Conference standings, click here.
