On Sunday morning, the Maritime Privateers women's lacrosse team concluded play in the 2019 Maritime Cup, as they faced off against the host Massachusetts Maritime. The Privateers came up victorious in the matchup as they completed a two-game sweep of its Maritime rivals and took home the Maritime Cup by defeating the Buccaneers by a score of 10-8.
The Privateers offense was led my senior
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) who netted a season-best six goals. The senior's first goal came with just 28:36 remaining in the first half as she connected on a pass from fellow senior
Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place). Pfundstein hit net three more times in the first half, including an unassisted goal, a free position shot and a goal off of an assist from Deleva. Pfundstein capped off her morning with two second half goals, including a free position shot and an assist from
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip). Behind the senior, the Privateers received a two-score effort by freshman
Jilliana Melford (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman). The freshman's two scores came off of first half assists from Pfundstein and Deleva. The final scorers for the Privateers was Deleva, who had one goal to go with her three assists, and
Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) who added a goal off of a free position shot in the first half.
At goal,
Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) recorded another victory as she added 11 saves and allowed eight goals.
In a first half dominated by the Privateers, Maritime entered the break up 8-3 on the Buccaneers. Massachusetts Maritime proceeded to go on a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to just two points with 10 minutes of play left. The Privateers defense and Hernandez stepped up big as Maritime would hold the Buccaneers scoreless for the remainder of the game. Massachusetts Maritime failed to connect on their lone two shot attempts allowed by the Privateers in the final 10 minutes.
The Privateers ended the game with advantages in major statistical categories, including a 12-to-8 advantage in draw controls, and a 36-to-30 advantage in ground balls.
The Maritime women's lacrosse team will return to action on Wednesday, March 13 at 4:00 pm to play Ramapo at Reinhart Field.
