Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with Road Loss at Manhattanville

The Maritime College women's lacrosse team commenced its 2019 season on Wednesday evening in Harrison, New York as they faced off against Manhattanville College. Despite a five-goal performance by senior Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) the Privateers found themselves on the losing end as they fell to the Valiants by a score of 17-9

Behind Deleva the Privateers offense generated two goals courtesy of senior Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and one goal apiece off the hands of freshman Jilliana Melford (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and sophomore Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip). As a team the Privateers assisted on three goals.

Defensively, Maritime totaled 10 caused turnovers from the Valiants. The Privateers had two caused turnovers apiece from the group of freshman Katherine Buser (Babylon, NY/Babylon), freshman Victoria Machado (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon), senior Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), and freshman Claudia Zieba (Lindenhurst, NY/Copiague). Murphy and Wright both had one caused turnover.

In goal, junior Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) made 18 saves, besting the Manhattanville goalies save total of 14.

Manhattanville opened the game with six of the first seven goals in the contest before the Privateers would score back-to-back goals from Wright and Deleva. Following her goal off of an assist from Pfundstein, Deleva would then continue her stellar scoring, as she would notch her third goal of the first period.

The Privateers came out of the half streaking as they added the first two goals of the second half to cut the Manhattanville lead to 9-6. Following the Privateers two unanswered goals, Manhattanville would then go on to string together four goals to take a seven-goal advantage and the eventual victory.

Maritime (0-1) will be back in action on Saturday March 9 as they head to Massachusetts to take on Maine Maritime in their first game of the Maritime Cup. The Privateers will then return to action the following day on March 10 to face off against Mass. Maritime.
