NEWBURGH, NY - The Maritime College men's soccer team found themselves in a familiar situation on Saturday afternoon in the Skyline Conference Championship game at Mount Saint Mary. The Privateers were heading into their third double overtime period of the playoffs, once again as a sever underdog. The sixth-seeded Maritime squad had previously defeated No. 3 USMMA in double overtime, No. 2 Manhattanville on penalty kicks, and now needed more extra time magic on the road against the top-seeded Knights. They got just that as
Frank Schmidt (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) delivered a game and championship-winning goal in the 106th minute on a breakaway off a pass from
Jack Kilmeade (Northport, NY/Northport) (Northport, NY/Northport).
Fresh off an emotional Wednesday night victory in the semi-finals, the Privateers got off to a slow start in the championship game as Mount Saint Mary netted the first goal of the game in the fourth minute of action. Despite the Knights controlling possession early on, Maritime bounced back in a big way as
Thomas Kropp (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) picked up a rebound from a free kick shot attempt by
James Roland (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) and tied the game at 1-1 in the 20th minute.
Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) kept the momentum going for the Privateers less than two minutes later as he buried a shot from just outside the box into the top right corner of the net. Unfortunately, the high-powered action continued in the championship game as the Knights scored the equalizer a minute later. With the score tied at 2-2, both defenses buckled down and the two teams entered halftime with the score tied.
After the high-scoring first half, the action settled down in the second half. However, Maritime was able to make the proper adjustments and controlled possession significantly better in the second half. They went on to out-shoot the Knights 6-4 in the second period, but nobody was able to find the back of the net and the Privateers entered their third straight overtime game of the playoffs.
In the first overtime period, Mount Saint Mary controlled the tempo as they had multiple good looks at winning the game. Luckily, goalkeeper
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and the Maritime defense held strong and forced the second and final overtime period.
With all signs pointing towards another penalty kick shootout, freshmen
Jack Kilmeade (Northport, NY/Northport) (Northport, NY/Northport) and
Frank Schmidt (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) came up clutch. Kilmeade intercepted an errant pass from the Mount Saint Mary goalkeeper and quickly found Schmidt cutting towards the goal. The Massapequa Park, NY native juked out the only defender and then beat the goalie in a one-on-one to score the game-winning goal. Check out the highlight and celebration from the Privateers below!
The Privateers will head to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2011, when they last won the Skyline Conference title. Maritime will learn who the play in the first round during the live NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
