The Maritime College men's basketball team picked up it's second straight win in thrilling as they completed an incredible comeback to defeat Hunter College 79-75 in overtime. The Privateers only lead in regulation came at 2-0 after the first bucket of the game, and they trailed by double digits in the second half, but ultimately clawed their way back into the game and a three-point bucket from
Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) with 35 seconds left sent the game into overtime. The overtime period saw another clutch three from McGovern with less than 40 seconds left and the Privateers held on for the four-point win.
"It wasn't the cleanest game we've ever played, but the team played hard and showed a lot of resiliency on the road," said head coach
Mike Berkun. "It's a great confidence boost for us going forward knowing that we can bounce back from a deficit like that and pull out the win down the stretch."
After taking the quick 2-0 lead, Maritime slowed down and eventually fell behind by as much as 13 points to the Hawks with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half. Still trailing by double digits with time winding down in the first half,
Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) and
Brennan Whelan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored the final seven points of the period to cut the advantage to just five points heading into the locker room.
The second half also saw a slow start from the Privateers, but they were able to close the gap and keep the game close down the stretch. Losing 60-54 with four minutes left to play, McGovern, Whelan, and
Griffin McNally (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) all scored to make it a one-point game at 62-61. However, Hunter quickly rebounded and took a 66-61 lead with less than a minute to play. After
Alec Downes (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) drew a foul and made two free throws,
Husene Camara (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglas) picked up a huge steal with 40 seconds left to give Maritime a chance at sending it into overtime. Camara then found McGovern spotted up behind the arc, ready to send the game into overtime. The senior guard, who scored his 1,000th career point the game before, did just that as he drained the three with 35 seconds left.
Overtime got off to a hot start for Maritime as a layup from Camara gave them a six-point lead with 2:30 left to play. Once again, the host Hawks had the answer and tied the game with 54 seconds left. McGovern made the final clutch play though as he drained another last minute shot from behind the arc. McGovern's clutch shooting gave the Privateers the 79-75 victory as they improved to 3-4 on the year.
Maritime will return to action on Sunday, December 8 as they take on the City College of New York at noon.
