OWINGS MILLS, MD - The Maritime College men's basketball team couldn't come out of the Stevenson Tournament with a win as they fell in the second round to McDaniel College 67-55.
After a slow start in the first half against Stevenson the night prior, the Privateers made the correction and came out strong against the Green Terror.
Mike Regan (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's) got the offense started with a three-pointer and then
Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) drained eight consecutive points to give Maritime a 13-5 advantage. Although McDaniel cut the lead to just one point later in the half, Maritime never relinquished the lead and entered the locker room with a 30-28 lead.
The Privateers continued to hold onto their slim lead to start the second half with contributions from
Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth),
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) and McGovern. However, with the score tied at 52-52 and six minutes remaining, the Green Terror made their run and started to take control of the game. The Privateers were unable to score in the final four minutes of action and ultimately fell to McDaniel 67-55.
McGovern tallied his first 20-point game of the 2019-20 season as he led all point-scorers with 22. Gray also reached double-digits with 10, while Regan tallied eight of his own.
Husene Camara (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglas) and Gray led the rebounding effort with five each.
"Obviously we wanted to come out of this tournament with a pair of wins, but we learned about ourselves as a team and will come out the other end for the better," said head coach
Mike Berkun. "We had a lot of ups and downs and we are ready to get to practice to work out the kinks. We have a quick turnaround before John Jay, which is another tough test for us."
The Privateers will take on the Bloodhounds on the road on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 8:00 p.m. before returning to Riesenberg Hall on Nov. 23 against New Paltz at 1 p.m.
