Men's Basketball Drops Road Test at York College

JAMAICA, NY -  The Maritime College men's basketball couldn't improve to 2-0 on the season as they fell in a tough road matchup at York College on Tuesday night 83-70.

The Cardinals got off to a hot start in the non-conference game as they jumped ahead 9-2 early in the opening half. However, two three-pointers by Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), and one from Mike Regan (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's) helped the Privateers tie the score at 16 just over five minutes into the game. The fast-paced play continued as both teams continued to score at a furious pace. Although Maritime tied the score at multiple times throughout the opening half, they were never able to take the lead.

As the first half came to a close, York attempted to pull away as they took a 10-point advantage with two minutes left to play. Maritime showed their resilience though as they cut the lead in half behind a layup from Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) with less than thirty seconds left to send it to halftime with a 47-42 lead for the Cardinals.

Despite the strong end to the first half, York stole the momentum early in the second period after scoring the first six points. Once again the Privateers bounced back and a three-pointer by McGovern with 14 minutes left cut the hosts lead to five points.

Unfortunately, Maritime couldn't get the stop they needed late in the game and were unable to complete the comeback in their second game of the season.

McGovern led the Privateers on the offensive end with 18 points, while Regan and Gray also reached double-digits with 14 and 10, respectively. Gray also led Maritime on the glass with eight rebounds, while Griffin McNally (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) added in eight points and six rebounds in the start. For the second straight game, the Privateers dominated in bench points, outscoring York 28-8. Sean Flynn (Flushing, NY/Holy Cross), Evan Sirakis (Oakland Gardens, NY/St. Francis Prep), and Ryan Donovan (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) all chipped in five bench points, while Nicholas Ovanessian (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) added three of his own.

Maritime falls to 1-1 on the season and will head to Stevenson on Friday and Saturday for back-to-back games. They will face off against the Mustangs on Friday at 8 p.m. To see the highlights from the Privateers season-opening win against Medgar Evers, click here.
