THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College swimming and diving teams opened up their 2019-20 season with a dual meet against William Paterson on Tuesday night. The men's team was able to come away with a dominant 158-60 victory, while the women's team fell by a score of 110-90.
On the women's side,
Maeve Lavery (Bronx, NY/St. Ferry) earned the first top place finish for the Privateers on the day in the 200-yard freestyle. She finished the event with a time of 2:11.54, beating out the top Pioneer by 10 seconds. In the next event,
Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) earned another first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.85.
Later in the meet,
Bridget Stack (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) and
Hannah Mesones (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo) picked up seven points with a second and third place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Brow then earned he second first-place finish of the day in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.5. In the 500-yard freestyle, Lavery continued her strong performance with a dominant win and a time of 6:00.71. Although the Privateers finished the day with a good win in the 200-yard freestyle relay with contributions from Stack,
Maura Neely (Towson, Md./Maryvale Prep),
Bethany Champlin (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Vincent), and
Anna Curran (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), they ultimately fell to the Pioneers 90-110.
On the men's side, Maritime got off to a hot start as they placed first and second in the 200-yard medley relay. The two teams finished just .1 seconds apart from each other, with the quartet of
Caelan Troy (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park),
Ian Folan (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame),
Alex Baros (Phoenix, AZ/Brophy College Preparatory), and Preston Troung taking first place. In the 200-yard freestyle,
Daniel Walsh (Naugatuck, CT/Sacred Heart) and Edwin Moriarty continued the big day with first and second place finishes and times of 1:54.03 and 1:54.30.
Troung came right back in the 50-yard freestyle and took the top finish with a time of 23.20. In the 200-yard IM, the Privateers took the top-three places behind
Matt Sesack (Sayville, NY/Sayville),
Gabriel Menz (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), and Brendan Raffey.
Stephen Roe (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township) continued the big day for the Privateers with an impressive time of 56.98 in the 100-yard butterfly. Later in the meet, Troy earned another win, this time in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.11. The Privateers went on to win the final three events, including the 200-yard freestyle relay behind the team of Troung, Troy, Walsh and
Zybo Marchetti (Key Largo, FL/Coral Shores).
