THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College women's soccer team played a thrilling second half against Old Westbury on Tuesday night, but ultimately came up short against the Skyline Conference foe as they lost 3-2.
Freshmen goalkeeper
Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY/Newfield) and the Privateers were outstanding in the first half against the Panthers as they turned away the first 19 shots they faced. Pomaro made multiple saves to keep Old Westbury off the board, but in the 45th minute with 30 seconds left to play, the Panthers finally broke through. The goal gave Old Westbury the momentum heading into the second half, but the Privateers responded well on offense.
Maritime saw multiple chances at getting their first goal on the board, but in the 77th minute
Ojaira Suero (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly) played a perfect through ball to
Brianne Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) who easily put the ball into the lower right corner to tie the game at 1-1. Unfortunately, the Panthers answered with two goals of their own as they took a two-goal advantage with less than two minutes left to play.
The Privateers weren't ready to give up yet though as thirty seconds later
Caitlin Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) perfectly struck a ball over the top of the goalies head to bring it to a one score game. With a little over a minute left to play, Maritime had possession of the ball inside the box, but were unable to put the ball on net to tie the game and complete the comeback.
Pomaro finished with 13 saves in net to lead the Privateers defense. The loss drops Maritime to 4-10 on the season and they will get back in action on Friday at 11 a.m. against Yeshiva University.
