Women's Volleyball Falls to Sarah Lawrence

The Maritime College women's volleyball team was unable to come up with a big road win on Thursday night as they fell to Sarah Lawrence in straight sets 25-7, 25-17, 25-15.

After a disappointing start to the match with a 25-7 defeat in the first set, the Privateers put up a battle in the second set. Trailing 21-9, Maritime picked up a massive seven point streak and brought the score within five points. The run was backed by an ace from Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY/Lawrence), and a block and kill from Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham). Unfortunately, the run was too late for the Privateers to complete the comeback and they entered a must-win third set.

Maritime hung with the Gryphons early on as they carried some momentum into the third set from their big run in the second set. However, it was Sarah Lawrence who pulled together a big mid-set run in the third and they took a 13-6 lead. The Privateers were unable to make a comeback in the final set of action and ultimately dropped the Skyline Conference matchup.

Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) led the offense with five kills, while Eagleton chipped in three of her own. Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) dished out 12 assists, while Rylee Malone (Southington, Conn./University High School of Science & Engineering) led the back line with 11 digs.

Maritime returns to action next Tuesday as they host Old Westbury at 7 p.m. in their final home game of the 2019 season.
