THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College women's soccer team returned to Reinhart Field on Saturday, October 12 to take on Manhattanville College, where they ultimately fell by a score of 11-1.
The Privateers came out strong on the defensive end as they turned away multiple opportunities from the Valiants. However, in the 15th minute Manhattanville was able to break through the stout defense and take a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, the Valiants were able to capitalize on the momentum and tacked on another goal less than a minute later.
Later in the half, Maritime scored a spectacular goal to cut the lead to 3-1.
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) out-ran the Manhattanville defense and dribbled the ball into the box, where she used her back heel to send the backward to
Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) at the top of the box. Woods was wide open after the pass and took a touch before firing the shot over the goalkeepers head. The Privateers goal cut the advantage to two goals, but Manhattanville had the answer once again and took back control of the game.
Maritime trailed the Valiants by four goals entering halftime. Unfortunately, the lead was insurmountable for the Privateers and they ultimately fell 11-1 to Manhattanville in their first year in the Skyline Conference.
Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY/Newfield)Â finished with nine saves in net, while
MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) finshed out the game in goal and tallied two saves of her own.
The loss dropped the Privateers to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in conference action. Maritime returns to action on October 16 when they travel to Farmingdale St. for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
