Women's Soccer Comes Up Short At St.Joseph's (Bklyn) in 3-1 Contest

On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime Privateers Women's Soccer hit the road for the second time in the 2018 season as they faced off against The St. Joseph's Brooklyn Bears. In this Skyline Conference matchup, the Privateers fell just short by a score of 3-1.

In their first conference road matchup of the season, Maritime battled from start to finish against the 5-5 Bears. After giving up two goals in the first period, the Privateers came out of the half ready to cut down the Bears lead, and that is exactly what they did. In the 49th minute Kayla Kelly (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) connected from a corner to hit net.The exhilarating one timer by the junior was her second goal of the 2018 season. Kelly who also plays goalie for the Privateers has been an integral player on offense all season.

Following the Kelly goal, the Privateers would then go on a nearly 30-minute run in which the Privateers held the Bears scoreless. This span included controlling defense which resulted in a blocked St. Joseph's shot in the 65th minute. In the 77th minute, the Bears hit net to take the eventual game deciding 3-1 lead.
In the contest, the Privateers took five shots, including four that came in the second period. The Privateers five shot attempts came from  Brianna Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), Leigh Kouril (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and Kelly. Both Etienne and Kouril forced their way through the Bears defense for shots on goal attempts.

In goal, Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) continued to be the anchor she has been for the Privateers for the past four seasons as well as proving why she is one of the most dominant goalies in the Skyline Conference. On the afternoon, Haverns totaled six saves. After allowing two early goals, Havens would then go on to save three consecutive goal attempts. Havens brilliance has been on display all Fall for the Privateers as she has garnered 44 saves.

The 1-5 Privateers will look to bounce back on Tuesday as they return to Reinhart Field to face conference foe Sarah Lawrence.
