The Maritime College women's soccer team was unable to pick up their first Skyline Conference win of the season on Thursday night against Sarah Lawrence. The Privateers game against the Gryphons was originally scheduled for Tuesday night, but after a lightning storm in the 59th minute, the game was wiped out and rescheduled. Unfortunately, the day between games didn't give Maritime the edge they were looking for and fell 8-1.
Following a flurry of offense to start the game from Sarah Lawrence, the Privateers started to settle in around 23rd minute. Maritime began to control the ball and keep it in on their side of the field as they recorded four shots between the 23rd and 26th minute. However, none of the shots found the back of the net and they weren't able to cut into the 3-0 lead.
Play continued to be even throughout the rest of the half, and with five minutes remaining,
Leigh Kouril (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown)Â made some great dribbling moves and got the Privateers a corner kick. After Maritime couldn't convert, Sarah Lawrence took back control and scored with less than two minutes before half to increase the lead to 4-0.
Despite trailing late in the second half, the Privateers never gave up and eventually found pay dirt. Kouril dribbled toward the end line and put in a perfect cross in front of the net. The ball found the foot of freshman midfielder
Brianna Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), who easily put the ball away for her fourth goal of the season.Â
Senior goalkeeper
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) picked up a game-high seven saves on the night.
Maritime has a quick turnaround as they return to Reinhart Field tomorrow night, Friday Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. for a Skyline matchup against Mount Saint Vincent. Following the game against the Dolphins, the Privateers have one day off before traveling to Yeshiva University for a 10 a.m. kickoff time on Sunday morning.
