Women's Soccer Plays Strong Second Half, but Falls to Mount Saint Vincent

Following a tough conference loss the night before to Sarah Lawrence, the Maritime College women's soccer team got back on the field Friday night against Mount Saint Vincent for its second Skyline matchup in 24 hours. The Privateers got off to a slow start, but played the Dolphins even for the final 55 minutes of the game.

Mount Saint Vincent got on the board in the first five minutes of the game off a nice shot into the upper left hand corner. Maritime College responded well and found freshman forward Brianna Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) streaking up the middle, but Etienne's shot was saved by the goalie and the Dolphins held the 1-0 lead.

The action slowed for about 15 minutes as the defenses were playing strong on the back line, but the Privateers found Etienne again on an offensive play. Unfortunately, the Mount Saint Vincent goalie made another good save at net to keep the game at 1-0. Five minutes later, the Dolphins took command of the game with two more goals.

Coming out of halftime slow had been an issue for some games early in the season for Maritime, however, the Privateers came out playing some of their best soccer in the second half. Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) made two solid saves early on, and then Maritime had another great chance at a goal off a corner kick, but a defender was in the perfect spot and made a defensive save to keep the shutout alive.

Both teams continued to battle for possession of the ball the rest of the half, but both goalie's and defenses were playing strong soccer and wouldn't let anything into the goal for the remainder of the game. Maritime finished with the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2, and totaled five shots on goal. Havens finished with double-digit saves on the night, tallying 10 total.

The Privateers showed what they are capable of in the second half and will look to continue that momentum into a road game on Sunday. Maritime will travel to Yeshiva for a 10 a.m. kickoff on Sunday, before heading back to Reinhart Field on Wed. Oct. 10 for a tough matchup against Farmingdale St.
