The Maritime College women's soccer team played stellar defense and shutout the Yeshiva Maccabees for a 2-0 win on Sunday morning. The victory marked the Privateers first Skyline Conference win and moved the team to 1-3 in conference play.
Maritime got off to a quick start offensively by registering four shots and four corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the game. The constant pressure on the Maccabees defense paid off in the 20th minute as
MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) buried a shot to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead. Fabiani netted the goal from 25 yards out and put it just out of reach from the goalie.
Leigh Kouril (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown)Â tallied her fourth assist of the season on the play.
The Privateers never let up for the remainder of the half picking up five more shots and four more corner kicks, but they were unable to tack on another goal and the lead remained at one going into half.
Maritime College was quick to tack on another goal in the second half though, as freshman forward
Brianna Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added her fifth goal of the season just six minutes into the half. Etienne took a through ball from Nikki Sarubbi and dribbled the ball inside the box before shooting it into the back of the net to push the lead to 2-0.
The Privateers continued to control the tempo of the game and only allowed three more shots for the remainder of the half. In total, Maritime out shot Yeshiva 24 to six and held a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) saved all five shots that were on target from the Maccabees.
