The Maritime Privateers men's soccer team returned to
Reinhart field for the first time in nearly two weeks and remained undefeated at home as they took out the College of Saint Elizabeth 4-2. With tonight's victory, the Privateers improved to 5-0 at home this season. The Privateers relied heavily on the depth of its team throughout the night as they saw contributions from almost everybody on the roster.
The Privateers continued to be led by a commanding offensive performance as they have now scored an impressive 33 goals at home this season. The Privateers finished the game with a 18-4 advantage on shots taken as well as a 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. Maritime also had the advantage on corner kicks by a margin of 5-3. The Privateers offense got rolling in the
16th minute of the first period as
Joseph Gino (Levittown, N.Y., MacArthur) continued his solid freshman campaign with his third collegiate goal. The Gino goal came on from a steal in Saint Elizabeth territory followed by a beautiful strike from outside the box and into the far upper left corner. The Gino goal would be the first of three unanswered Privateers scorers. Sophomore
Jerome Eastwood (Houston, Texas, Stratford) got on the board next with his first goal of the 2018 season. Eastwood's goal was a monster free kick from nearly 45 yards away that caught the goalie completely by surprise and went over his head and into the back of the net.
After returning from the half with the 2-0 lead, Maritime quickly added to their score total in the
52nd minute when senior
Shevaughn Sheriffe (Yonkers, N.Y., Cypress Creek (Fla.)) hit the back of the net. The Privateers final score would come in the
79th minute from another Privateers freshman,
Jack Dugan (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai).
The Privateers defense also turned in solid performance from start to finish. Maritime limited Saint Elizabeth to a total of one shot in the first half, which resulted in the first period shutout.
In goal, the Privateers received solid contributions from a duo of freshman in
Alec Wurtz (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and
Tim Nichols (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Francis). In the victory, Wurtz garnered his first collegiate win.
The Privateers will return to the pitch on Friday, Sep. 28 as they take on Skyline Conference foe, Sarah Lawrence. The matchup with the Gryphons will be crucial for conference standings as both teams are 1-1 in Skyline play overall.
