The Maritime College women's volleyball team dropped its second game in this weekend's Maritime Classic. The Privateers fell 3-0 to the Maine Maritime Mariners, despite a redeeming third set.
The Privateers generated their best offensive performance of the morning in set 3 by scoring their match best 15 points. With the Mariners four points shy of clinching victory, the Privateers scored four consecutive points led by kills fromÂ
Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Roy C. Ketcham)Â and
Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn., Stone Memorial).
The Privateers were offensively led by familiar faces in Steele, who had a team-best four kills, as well asÂ
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y., Lawrence) andÂ
Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y., Mt. Sinai), who contributed five and two assists, respectively.
In the absence of seniorÂ
Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas, St. Agnes Academy), the trio of newcomersÂ
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn., Danbury), Eagleton and Â
Rylee Malone (Southington, Conn., University High School of Science & Engineering) continued to show their reliability for the Privateers despite not having the leadership of Hayes on the court. Eagleton contributed three kills on the morning as Custodio added two of her own. As a server, Malone had one ace. So far this season, the three freshman have started in all contests for the Privateers. In her first start of the season,Â
Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J., Brick Memorial) was effective in her replacement of Hayes.
On the defensive end, the Privateers were on par with the Mariners all game long. Led by Custodio, Eagleton and Kirchner, Maritime trailed by a slim 25-23 margin. Custodio led the charge with six digs as Eagleton and Kirchner followed her with five a piece.Â
The Privateers will return to Riesenberg Gymnasium tomorrow at 1. p.m. for one final time in the Ninth Annual Maritime Classic as they will go up against Massachusetts Maritime.
