Volleyball Battles College of New Rochelle to Three-Set Loss

BOX SCORE - The Maritime College women's volleyball team was unable to get back in the win column after a tough home tri-match last weekend as they fell on the road to the College of New Rochelle Tuesday night. The Privateers battled the Blue Angels, but couldn't come up with an answer to their high powered offense.

The first set began with both teams trading the lead up until 11-12, when the College of New Rochelle took the advantage for the final time in the set. The Blue Angels won seven of eight points to take a 17-12 lead and Maritime College was unable to bounce back.

The Blue Angels kept their momentum rolling into the second set as they never let the Privateers put together a run of more than two points as they rolled to a 25-11 win. However, the Privateers were resilient and wouldn't let the same thing happen in the third set. Trailing 10-3 early on, sophomore setter Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) turned to freshman middle block Celyna Custodio () to get some momentum back on Maritime's side and she did just that by following up the kill with a block assist by teaming up with Kirchner on the outside. The next point, Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial) kept the comeback going with a kill of her own to cut the lead to 10-6.

Later in the set, Custodio and Eagleton combined for two kills in another three-point run for the Privateers as they kept the lead at four points for the College of New Rochelle. Despite Maritime constantly fighting to stay competitive in the set, the Blue Angels offense was just too much for the Privateers and they fell in the final set 25-19.

Middle blocker Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) continued her dominant senior campaign as she led the team in kills again, this time with six. Custodio was right behind her with a hitting percentage of .300 and five kills, while Steele chipped in four of her own. Kirchner dished out 15 assists while Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) and Rylee Malone (Southington, Conn./University High School of Science & Engineering) led the defensive effort with seven digs a piece.

The Privateers are back in action this weekend at home as they host the annual Maritime Classic. They will take on USMMA Friday at 6 p.m., Maine Maritime Saturday at 11 a.m., and Massachusetts Maritime Sunday at 1 p.m.
