Women's Soccer Falls to John Jay 4-1

The Maritime College women's soccer team was unable to overcome a slow start against John Jay College and fell 4-1 Wednesday at Reinhart Field.

The Privateers got off to a sluggish start as the Bloodhounds were able to capitalize early on a great through ball in the sixth minute to take an early 1-0 lead. However, the Privateers were able to put together good offense in return as MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) was able to put a shot on the goal in the ninth minute, but was unable to ge the ball to squeak past the goalie.

Ten minutes later, John Jay added to its lead with a well placed shot from Gianna Russo from just inside the box. The Bloodhounds continued to pressure the Privateers defense and Katie Healy added her second and third goal in the 22nd and 35th minute to help John Jay jump out to a 4-0 lead.

With time winding down in the half, the Privateers were looking to get some momentum and was able to get a good look at adding a goal with under a minute remaining. Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip) made a great individual effort after some solid passing by Maritime and got a good look at a shot. However, Giorgio hit it just right of the goal and the half ended with the Privateers trailing by four.

Despite the slow start to the game, Maritime came out strong defensively in the second half and was able to hold the score at 4-0 with constant pressure from the Bloodhounds. In the 72nd minute, the Privateers were able to counter attack and keep the ball in John Jay's half of the field. The Bloodhounds were unable to handle the attacking and Brianne Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was able to steal the ball inside the box and launch a shot past the goalie to close the gap to 4-1.

Unfortunately, it was too late for the Privateers to keep the offensive momentum rolling and they were unable to add any more goals before the end of the game. However, Maritime was able to prove that they could play with a good John Jay squad by winning the second half 1-0 behind solid defense and a good offensive attack.

Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) was a force in goal as usual for Maritime and finished with six saves on the day. The Privateers enjoy some time off before getting back on the field Sep. 22 at Manhattanville College and will return home on Sep. 26 against Saint Elizabeth at 7:30 p.m.
