Women’s Lacrosse Blanks Mitchell for First Shutout in Program History

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team recorded the first shutout in program history as the Privateers knocked off the Mitchell Mariners by the score of 19-0 on Alumni Field.

The win was not only the first shutout in program history but it was also Maritime's largest margin of victory in a single game. The previous largest win in Maritime women's lacrosse history was a 20-2 victory to start off the 2010 season on March 6 against Saint Elizabeth.

Maritime was led offensively by junior Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place), who had four goals and four assists for a team-best eight points. Her eight points was the third-best mark in program history and is one point shy of her career-high nine points, while she set against Sage as a freshman. With her four assists, Deleva also broke the tie atop the all-time assist list in program history and now has 21 for her career.

Junior Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) also had a big afternoon with four goals and three assists for seven points, while she also added four draw controls and two caused turnovers to the effort. Freshman Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) had three goals and one assist, while also leading the team with seven draw controls, she was also tied with Pfundstein for the team lead with two caused turnovers on the afternoon.

Junior Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) added two goals, while sophomore Anna Smith (Sayre, Pa./Waverly) had three points with a goal and two helpers. Junior Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had one goal and one assist, while seniors Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington) and Jessica Yee (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) along with sophomore Lilianna Di Gesu (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) and freshman Amy Landman (Norfolk, Va./Maury) each had one goal apiece in the one-sided affair.

In goal, sophomore Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) picked up the shutout victory for her second win of the season as she stopped three shots on the afternoon.

Maritime got on the board just 64 seconds into the contest as Pfundstein opened the scoring off a feed from Smith. Pfundstein made it 2-0 less than a minute later off a pass from Wright before Deleva made it 3-0 as Pfundstein grabbed the assist to open with a hand in the first three goals of the game.

Deleva increased the lead to 4-0 off a pass from Salatto, before Pfunstein netted her third goal of the contest to give Maritime a five-goal lead with 5:30 gone by in the game. Wright scored the next two goals before Case got on the board as the Privateers scored three goals in less than a minute.

At the 16:00 mark of the first half Maritime took a nine-goal lead as Pfundstein scored her fourth of the afternoon off a pass from Deleva. Maritime's 10th goal came from Deleva off a pass from Smith to start the running clock with 15:21 to go in the opening half.

Murphy and Deleva added two more goals late in the half to give Maritime a 12-goal cushion heading into the halftime break.

Smith got a goal off a feed from Pfundstein to open the scoring in the second half, before Yee tallied her first of the season with 24:22 left in the game. Salatto got on the board as Deleva picked up the helper to give Maritime a 15-goal lead.

Landman scored the first goal of her collegiate career at 16:47 of the second half to put the Privateers up by 16. Di Gesu and Murphy scored off passes from Deleva to increase the lead to 18, before Wright capped off the scoring with 1:49 left in the game to give Maritime its largest margin of victory in program history.

Maritime (2-2) will look to use the momentum of its two-game winning streak to head into its Skyline Conference opener, which has been rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m., when the Privateers host the Purchase Panthers for a 5 p.m. start on Reinhart Field.

Mitchell (0-2) will host Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in its next home game, which takes place on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in New London, Connecticut.
