The Maritime College men's basketball team traveled to Yeshiva University on Saturday night and couldn't pull out the win as they fell 79-56 to the defending Skyline Conference champions.
The Privateers got off to a hot start led by two three-pointers from
Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and they jumped ahead 15-6 in the first eight minutes of the game. However, the Maccabees started to find their rhythm and offense and quickly climbed back into the half.Â
With the score knotted at 23 with just over four minutes remaining, both teams were hoping to gain the momentum heading into the locker room. Unfortunately, the ball wasn't bouncing Maritime's way and they entered halftime trailing 32-24.
Yeshiva continued its momentum from the first half and took an early double-digit lead in the second half. The advantage proved to be too large for the Privateers to mount a comeback attempt and they fell 79-56.
Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) led Maritime on offense with 12 points while McGovern was right behind with 11 of his own.
Brennan Whelan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) chipped in nine points and five assists.
The Privateers will take a break for the rest of the semester and will return to the court on Thursday, Jan. 3 against Mount Saint Mary in Riesenberg Hall.Â
