Earlier today, the Men's Basketball team was defeated in their Skyline Conference opening matchup against the Farmingdale State Rams by a score of 90-58. The Privateers now fall to 1-6 on the 2018-19 campaign.
The Privateers afternoon was highlighted by a fast start out of the gate. After trailing behind 5-0 to open up competition, the visiting Privateers proceeded to outscore the Rams 15-9 heading into the halfway mark of the first quarter. The Privateers run included nine points via three-point field goals including two from
Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and one from
Mike Regan (Dix Hills, N.Y./St. Anthony's). The Privateers shooting from behind the arc was a constant theme throughout the half as they shot 41.7% to best the Rams 35.3%.
In the second half, the Privateers could not continue their solid shooting from early on in the game as they allowed the Rams to hold on to their lead. Despite the outcome, the Privateers received solid performances throughout their roster. Walker, who led the Privateers in scoring, totaled 17 points on 4-8 shooting from the field, 2-3 from three-point range and 7-8 from the free-throw stripe. Walker,
Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) added 12 points. On the season, McGovern has scored in double-digits in six of the seven games played. Sophomore guard
Brennan Whelan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) recorded three assists to add to his team-high 32 on the season. Off the bench, Regan provided a spark for Maritime as he added six points on 2-3 shooting from behind the arc.
Another bright spot for Maritime was their shooting from the charity stripe. On the day, the Privateers made nearly 70% of their free-throws. The Privateers continue to be a solid free-throw shooting team as they now have a season mark of .679%.
The Privateers will return to the court on Tuesday as they continue their road-trip against St. Joseph's. Two days later, the Privateers will return home to Riesenberg Gymnasium on December 6
th as they host Old Westbury in their "Lace it Up" game.
