The Maritime College men's and women's swimming teams dominated their home opener against SUNY Old Westbury Monday night. The men's team rolled to a 142-38 win, while the women picked up their first win of the season with an impressive 165-12 win.
The women started out the meet with a first and second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay.
Hannah Mesones (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo),
Maura Neely (Towson, Md./Maryvale Prep),
Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), and
Alice Limanova (Lake Hiawatha, NJ/Parsippany)Â picked up 11 points with a first place finish, while
Emma Haedrich (West Islip, NY/West Islip),
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport),
Katia Aaron (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence), and
Samantha Brow (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) weren't far behind and earned four points in second place.
They backed up the relay with three more top finishes in the 200-yard freestyle. Senior
Emily Zink (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) led the way with a 2:22.14 time while
Erica Davis (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and
Caitlin Corrao (Flushing, NY/St. Francis Prep)Â followed behind with times of 2:30.74 and 2:33.08, respectively. The 50-yard freestyle continued the dominance for the Privateers as they finished in all top three places yet again.
Katherine Green (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) was the first to touch the wall at 27.09, while
Gabrielle Thompson (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) and
Bethany Champlin (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Vincent)Â were right behind in second and third at 28.73 and 29.47.
The 200-yard medley saw a first and second place finish for Maritime as Brow picked up the win at 2:48.08, and Haedrich finished second at 2:59.15. In the 100-yard butterfly Green and Aaron kept the momentum going with times of 1:04.33 and 1:08.91 in first and second place, respectively. Zink, Champlain, and
Megan Alicea (Copake, N.Y./Taconic Hills) continued the strong swimming in the 100-yard freestyle with top three finishes.
Corrao,
Ashley Giorgio (Islip, N.Y./Islip), and Haedrich dominated the 100-yard backstroke with top three finishes and times of 1:24.27, 1:33.85, and 1:46.65, respectively. Aaron, Davis, and Mesones then followed it up in the 500-yard freestyle placing first, second, and third respectively. Neely closed out the individual events for the Privateers with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:37.07. The final event was the 200-yard freestyle, where Maritime placed first and second. The team of Alicea, Giorgio, Thompson, and Green came in first at 1:59.53, while the group of
Anna Curran (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), Neely, Limanova, and Mesones came in second at 2:17.04.
On the men's side, the team of
Caelan Troy (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park),
Matt Hart (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep),
Nathanael Marino (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain), and
Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) got things going with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay at 1:51.41 and teammates
Zach Woolley (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie),
Gabriel Menz (Vineland, NJ/Vineland),
Adam Durrua (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach), and
Tommy Murray (Paramus, N.J./Bergen Catholic) finished second at 1:52.70.
In the 200-yard freestyle
Daniel Walsh (Naugatuck, CT/Sacred Heart), Durrua, and
Spencer Blass (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) picked up top three finishes to keep the winning ways going for the Privateers. In the 50-yard freestyle,
Seth Champlin (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Murray came in second and third at 23.98 and 24.30, respectively. Troy earned his second win of the day in the 200-yard medley with a time of 2:15.85, while
Shane Hoey (Bell Harbor, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and
Nicholas Mastronikolas (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park)Â also picked up points for Maritime in second and third.
Marino continued the dominance for the Privateers in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.29 and Alexander Baros finished second at 58.70. The 100-yard freestyle saw another three swimmers place top-three for Maritime as Blass came in first at 52.52, Mario Goncalves touched second at 59.54, and
Derrick Kennedy (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) at third with a time of 1:02.40.
Kevin Wu (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) then pulled out a win in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.74.Â
Walsh turned in a solid race in the 500-yard freestyle with a first place finish and a time of 5:02.75.
Tristan DeYoung (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and
Jesse Pierce (Broadway, Va./Broadway) finished second and third, respectively, to pick up points for the Privateers. In the final individual event,
Christopher Chilelli (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional)Â came in second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.94, while Menz and Hart finished second and third, respectively.
In the final event, the team of Wu, Walsh, Marino, and Troy earned the win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:36.58 and
Stephen Kelleher (Poughquag, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), Durrua, DeYoung, and Blass came in second at 1:39.54.
The Privateers are on the road this weekend for two tough Skyline Conference matchups. On Friday, Maritime will take on both St. Joseph's Long Island and Sarah Lawrence. Less than 24 hours later, they will head to USMMAÂ for an invitational on Saturday morning.
