Men's Soccer Season Comes to a Close Following 5-0 Defeat to Rutgers-Newark

On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime Men's Soccer 2018 season came to a close as they fell by a score of 5-0 to the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Knights in the first round of the ECAC Tournament. The Privateers season concludes with a record of 14-6-1 which was good enough to earn them their second ever and second consecutive ECAC Tournament bid. The Privateers squad set a program record in wins as well as finished second in the Skyline Conference.

The Privateers afternoon was highlighted by a first half in which their defense held the Scarlet Knights to one goal. Despite the 15 shots taken by Rutgers-Newark in the first half, the Privateers defense managed to penetrate the ball leaving the Scarlet Knights to take tough shots in which they were unable to connect on. The Privateers defense was anchored by junior goalie Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) who recorded three of his eight total saves in the first half. Rodriguez, who showed brilliance all season long, finishes the season with a career total of 240 saves which puts him fourth all-time in program history. Rodriguez will look to add to his total during his final season at Maritime in 2019.

On the offensive end the Privateers had a total of eight shots. The Privateers efforts were led by senior Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev./Plainfield South (Ill.)) who had three shot attempts. The Privateers season concludes with a total of 62 goals which stands four away from the program record set in 2007.

The Privateers will graduate four seniors in forward Stefan Gittens (Baton Rouge, La./Baton Rouge Magnet), defender Lucas Antenucci (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem), midfielder Gallt and defender Joe Merendino (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling). In the four seasons that this group were a part of the Privateers program, they had a winning record in three.

The second place Privateers capped off their season with six All-Skyline Team honorees. Among the list is head coach Daniel Gwyther, whom was named 2018 Skyline Conference Coach of the Year. In his fifth season at the helm, Gwyther guided the Privateers in their historic season. At Maritime, Gwyther improves to a record of 55-36-4.

The Privateers also had three players that earned a First-Team All Skyline nod. This list includes Gallt, Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent). In his final season in Throggs Neck, Gallt reached net a total of ten times which puts him at a total of 35 in his collegiate career which is good enough for second all-time in Privateers program history. Gallt also totaled eight assists on the season which puts leaves him tied for second all-time in program history with 24 assists.

The final two All-Skyline honorees for the Privateers were Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and Sean O'Neil, both players received the nod as part of the All-Skyline Second-Team.

The Privateers will look to build off of yet another historic season as they return a plethora of returning contributors.
